Brno, Jun 3 (BD) — FC Zbrojovka second in the standings and SK Líšeň regains eighth; local teams dominate early baseball standings; and the Brno sports schedule.

FC Zbrojovka Earns Four Points in Two Games

FC Zbrojovka has won and tied after restarting the Fortuna:Národní Liga season. SK Líšeň has lost, tied and tied. Both teams may have missed opportunities, but they are still creeping up the standings.

FC Zbrojovka Brno is 11-5-3 through 19 games. Their 39 points puts them in second place, behind league-leading FK Pardubice (14-2-3 in 19 games, 44 points).

Four teams, however, are within three points of Zbrojovka: FC Hradec Králové (10-6-4 in 20 games, 36), FC Vysočina Jihlava (10-6-4 in 20 games, 36), FK Viktoria Žižkov (11-2-7 in 20 games, 35) and FK Dukla Praha (11-2-6 in 19 games, 35). The top team at the end of the season will move up to the top league for next season. The second- and third-place teams need to win home-and-away series to advance.

SK Líšeň (6-8-6 through 20 games, 26) dropped in the standings after losing its opening game, then crawled back up to eighth place when it tied fourth-place Jihlava, 1-1, on Monday.

Zbrojovka restarted the season with a 2-1 win at Ústí nad Labem last Thursday when Jakub Přichystal scored a goal and assisted newcomer Jan Hladík for another. On Monday, Brno had a scoreless tie against Dukla Praha.

The Fortuna:Národní Liga schedule will have about two games a week for the next month and a half as it rushes to complete the spring half of the 2019-20 season.

Zbrojovka plays at Vítkovice on Thursday at 5 p.m. then hosts Třinec on Saturday at 5 p.m. SK Líšeň is at FK Viktoria Žižkov on Saturday at 5 p.m.

The following week will feature The Big Game: SK Líšeň will host Zbrojovka Brno on Thursday, June 11, at 6 p.m. The game will be on CT Sport.

Brno Teams Collectively Win Five of Six

The three Brno baseball teams occupy the top three spots in the extraliga baseball standings through two weekends of play.

Cardion Hroši Brno (4-0) are the only undefeated team. Draci Brno (3-1) and Technika Brno (3-1) are tied for second along with Eagle Praha (3-1) and Kotlářka Praha (3-1). Two-time defending champion Arrows Ostrava (2-2) is in sixth.

The Hroši, who swept league newcomer SaBaT Praha in two games last weekend, will have a tough challenge this weekend when they go to Ostrava on Friday (first pitch at 7 p.m.) and then host the Arrows in the return game in Brno on Saturday (4 p.m.).

Starting pitching has been strong so far for the Hroši. Jan Kucin is 2-0 with no earned runs in 16 innings pitched. Raymond Whitehead is also 2-0; he has allowed just one earned run in 12 innings. But the offense has been solid, too: Michal Ondráček has nine hits in 18 at bats, including a home run and six RBI. Dan Ondroušek has six hits in 15 at bats with a homer and six RBI. Marek Sláma is hitting .500, with four hits in eight at bats.

The Draci, who are led by Radim Chroust (2-0, one earned run in 12 innings), host Kotlářka on Saturday (2 p.m.) and go to Prague on Sunday (2 p.m.)

Technika has a similar schedule: at home with SaBaT on Saturday (4 p.m.) and in Prague against the same team on Sunday (4 p.m.)

The Brno Sports Report is published every Wednesday. All dates and times are subject to change. Most of the stories are about the traditional “English-speaking” team sports — football, hockey, baseball, basketball, American football, cricket, rugby, etc. — but it is also about the interesting local spectator and participation sports — tennis, badminton, running, horse racing, swimming, rock climbing, biking, etc. If you have any suggestions for what should be included, please comment below or send an email to
