South Moravian Population is Aging – 20% of Population Over 65

According to the data released today by the Czech Statistical Office, the average age of the South Moravian Region population reached 42.4 years in 2018 and has increased by 5.7 years since 1991. Photo credit: KK.

Brno, May 2 (BD) – At the end of 2018, the population aged 65 and over was almost 234,000, which was 19.7% of the South Moravian Region’s population. On the other hand, the inhabitants up to 14 years of age accounted for 15.9% of the population.

2004 was the last year in which the proportion of children in the population was higher than that of the population aged 65 and over (14.7% and 14.6% respectively).

In terms of the age structure of the population, the largest part of the region’s population consists of persons aged 15 to 64 (764,700 persons, i.e. 64.4% of the total).

On average, the youngest population in the South Moravian Region is in the Brno-venkov District, with the highest proportion of children in the population (18.0%). Hodonín has the lowest percentage of children in the population (14.3%). The second “oldest” district is Brno-City (average age of 42.8 years), which is related to the highest share of persons aged 65 and over (20.6%).
