Brno, Oct 12 (BD) – The Goose on a String Theatre (Divadlo Husa na provázku) on Zelný trh is a jewel in the crown of Brno’s theatre scene, with a rich history dating back to Communist times, as Vaclav Havel’s favoured theatre in Brno. This October, the theatre continues its special series of English-friendly performances, with experimental productions based on Cervantes’ “Don Quixote” and Dostoevsky’s “The Gambler”.
First up is “The Gambler”, taking place this Thursday, October 14th, a production by the controversial director Michal Hába based on Dostoevsky’s short story, in which he used his personal experience as a gambler to settle his account with Western thinking. Main character Alexei hates gambling, debts, but is simultaneously fascinated by the world of money. He knows what he doesn’t want, but he doesn’t know exactly what he wants – and gambling is the only thing at hand. A story of love in the days of late capitalism, already two hundred years late.
This is followed next Tuesday, October 19th, by “Don Quixote”, Cervantes’ classic novel depicting the turbulent beginning of the European modern age, when the only divine Truth disintegrated into hundreds of relative truths, and the human desire to know and question turned to reality itself. Directed by Jan Mikulášek, this production takes the form of “a discussion show about reality”, and promises, as always, a uniquely Provázek take on the classic story.
Both productions will be accompanied by English sur-titles, and both contain strobe lighting effects.
Tickets are available from the theatre’s e-shop.
