Brno, Dec 8 (BD) – There’s a whole host of events going on in the city to raise your spirits as the cold sets in, from a DIY experience at the Xmas Accessory Workshop to learning the Latin dances salsa and bachata, and the fun doesn’t stop there. Winter shopping, ice skating, concerts and exhibitions are also on the schedule for this week!
Who doesn’t love a chance to learn sexy new dance routines!? Try learning the simple arm-styling, solo steps of salsa and bachata: a class of Salsa and Bachata for beginners will take place every Tuesday at La Casa Verde for those in love with two of the most exotic and sensual Latin dances. While salsa is a fast-paced dance with intricate music, bachata is slow and romantic. All in all, the class will get you acquainted with the very first steps of these styles using different techniques of body movement, footwork and partnerwork. The class will be in English, and you will need to register in advance. For more information about the class, check the Facebook event (in English).
Let your imagination run wild while playing with leather, and you might end up with a personalised belt and bag for yourself or as a gift for your best friends! MANi will host a special workshop, “All Inclusive Xmas Accessory”, where you can make your own belts and urban body bags based on the concept of circular economy, using leather and other materials. The workshop’s artists will show you how to use the tools and choose material for your design. More importantly, they will give you some tricks and tips on how to keep the items for a long time. The events will take place on December 11th and December 14th. Make sure to reserve a space early for the workshop, as capacity is limited. You can book your spot and find a full description of the workshop on the Facebook event (in Czech and English).
From engineering equipment and weaponry to the stories of life in refugee camps, the “30th Anniversary of The Fall of The Iron Curtain” exhibition presents a rich variety of objects from the former Czechoslovakia during the Iron Curtain period from 1948 to 1989. The exhibition also features an interactive program allowing visitors to engage in history, including finding cubes, puzzles and coloring books, among many other activities. The exhibition is running from now until May 3rd, 2020 at Brno Technical Museum. You can find more information about the exhibition on the official website (in Czech) of the event.
Far away from home? Want to celebrate a Christmas night with friendly people? Come along to the Xmas Meet-up on December 12th at the Domeq building, to get rid of those alone-over-the-holiday blues. This is the perfect chance to spend some time with locals and foreigners living in Brno, comparing lovely Christmas traditions in different cultures among beautiful decorations and over great drinks. If you are interested in the Christmas meeting, fill in the registration form, or you can find more information about the meet-up on the Facebook event (in English).
Czech Theater’s play “Charlotte and Alice” will return to Music Lab on December 15th with a dramatic reading of the letters exchanged between Charlotte Garrigue Masaryk and Alice Masaryk. The play is inspired by over 200 letters that Charlotte Garrigue, wife of the president Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, wrote to her daughter Alice while she was imprisoned in Austria. The main themes of the story are Czech history, feminism, and life in prison, based around the motif of a long-distance mother-daughter relationship. If you are craving a warm night indoors with a heartwarming story, you can find a description of the play at this link (in English), and tickets are from CZK 100 (for students) to CZK 200.
Another musical concert is coming to town, even better news for you if you happened to miss the film music tour last week! Join the “Lords Of The Sound” “Oscar Music Awards” on December 10th for an evening full of film rhythms, which will put you in the mood for movie nights. The featured music of the show is a brilliant arrangement of Oscar-winning film soundtracks from Avatar, Star Wars, The Artists, Titanic and so on, accompanied by unique visual light effects and high-quality live sound. The two-hour concert will be performed at Zoner Bodyhall. Check the Facebook event (in Czech) page to find more information.
Get your skates on! The ice skating rink around the Margrave Jošt statue in Brno city centre has finally opened to keep Brno’s citizens entertained during the winter season. Whether you can whirl like Rika Kihira or just stagger around like Bambi, a rink is a dance floor for everyone. You can find a detailed schedule of opening times together with the admission fees in this article (in English). The ice rink will be open until March 2020.
Black Friday is over, but you can engage in some more sustainable hunting for treasures at cheap prices at one of Brno’s busy winter flea markets during the upcoming week. At the Christmas flea market Hadrárna version 78 (Vánoční Hadrárna vol. 78) and the Alfa Flea Market (Bleší trh Brno ALFA pasáž) you can find fashionable second-hand clothes (mainly from Vánoční Hadrárna), hand-crafted products, books, and used goods (from Alfa). If you’re on the lookout for something old, but new to you, the Christmas flea markets are the place to be. The Christmas flea market Hadrárna will open on Monday, December 9th at Buranteatr and Black Box Cafe, and Alfa flea market will be run through the weekend on December 14th-15th in Alfa Pasaz.
