Fresh twist on the genre classics. The twentieth open-air Špilberk International Music Festival will feature several attractive guest stars – New York’s Grammy holders The Klezmatisc, twenty-one-year-old “Talentmania” musical talent contest winner, sopranist Patricia Janečková, and four Slovak virtuousos of Janoska Ensemble. August’s Špilberk will also see a special tribute concert of the Czech National Symphony Orchestra with screening dedicated to the world-famous director with Czech roots Miloš Forman. The festival will be opened and closed by the Brno Philharmonic Orchestra, “Filharmonie Brno”. Photo credit: Courtesy of Filharmonie Brno.
Brno, Jul 4 (BD) – A walk through the summer evening, a glass of wine, symphonic music in the main castle courtyard – this is the Špilberk International Music Festival, which this year’s Brno Philharmonic Orchestra organizes for the twentieth time. “Again, we will offer four concerts and two cinema-concerts,” says Kateřina Konečná of Filharmonie Brno.
Twenty-one-year-old opera star Patricia Janečková, the absolute winner of the Talentmania competition will sing arias from the works of Berlioz, Offenbach, Lehár, Dvořák and others accompanied by the orchestra under the baton of Estonian conductor Risto Joost. With the program Romantic Carnival, Janečková will perform in the courtyard on August 14.
The genre will change the following day. The legend of the Klezmer genre that builds upon Jewish tradition in Eastern Europe, the New York band The Klezmatisc, will take over Špilberk’s scene. “You can look forward to excellent music, after all they are Grammy holders,” said Marie Kučerová, the director of the Brno Philharmonic.
A tribute to Miloš Forman through a special screening with the live music from Hair, Amadeus, Ragtime, and Firemen’s Ball will happen on August 21. A day later, the festival will end with the Slovak Janoska Ensemble – four musicians who, thanks to a new look at classical music, reap worldwide ovations. Their music draws from jazz, classics, Latin American music, and modern pop.
“The concerts always start at 8 PM, two cinema concerts a half hour later. Tickets of the price starting at CZK 90 can be bought at the presale or at the Philharmonic website. A special discounted festival pass is also available,” Konečná added.
