Brno Contemporary Orchestra Celebrates Centenary of Alois Piňos’s Birth With Commemorative Concert

On 15 October, Brno Contemporary Orchestra (BCO) will present a two-part evening in Kohoutovice, entitled ‘Kohout a Borovice’ (‘Rooster and Pine’), dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of composer Alois Piňos and artist Dalibor Chatrný.

In the afternoon, a commemorative bench will be unveiled on Piňosova, accompanied by an unusual “date” between bass and soprano. In the evening, BCO will mark Piňos’ legacy with a concert of his works in the gymnasium of Chalabalova Elementary School, also featuring compositions by his colleagues and students.

“Piňos was a real joker, to the point that I think it might have annoyed some people, so even a commemoration of him cannot be completely serious,” said Viktor Pantůček, BCO dramaturg. “So, dating ads instead of a successful date, a living room piano instead of a concert grand piano, and finally a gym instead of a concert hall… everything is part of a kind memory of a wonderful composer.”

At 5pm, district representatives of Kohoutovice will unveil a bench inspired by Static Music, an audiovisual electroacoustic composition by Alois Piňos and Dalibor Chatrný. A guitarist, soprano and bassist will perform Alois Piňos’s picturesque ‘Acquaintances’, based on the texts of dating advertisements from 1975, performing from a 3D-printed installation that will remain as an integral part of Piňosova.

At 7pm, a concert will take place in the gym of the Chalabalova elementary school. Alongside Piňos’s composition ‘Stella matutina’ from the early 1990s, and the unfinished ‘Look Back and Forward ‘83”, which characterize his poetics, the work of his younger colleagues Josef Berg and Josef Adamík will also be performed, as well as five contemporary interludes for Piňos’s own piano, lent by his widow – including one written by his son Mikuláš Piňos.

The bench and the concert were planned in cooperation with the Brno-Kohoutovice Municipal District; the concert will take place in cooperation with Chalabalova Elementary School and Kindergarten. The event is part of the BCO Okrajiny dramaturgical season, an accompanying program of the Moravian Autumn festival, and also a commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Chalabalova school.
