MEN’S FOOTBALL
Zbrojovka, Líšeň Have Five Games Left
FC Zbrojovka has scored a point in the Fortuna:Národní Liga in every game since coming back from the novel coronavirus pause this spring, earning 20 points in eight games.
More sustained solid play will give the team a solid chance to move up into the higher league for next season.
Most recently, Zbrojovka completed a tough stretch with two wins and a tie, beating FC Vysočina Jihlava, 5-2; giving up a late goal to settle for a tie at FC Hradec Králové, 1-1; and then coming from behind to beat MFK Chrudim, 3-2.
Zbrojovka is now 16-6-3 with 54 points. They are four points behind league-leader FK Pardubice (18-4-3, 58 points), who had two ties, including at SK Líšeň. There is a nine-point gap to third-place FK Viktoria Žižkov (14-3-8, 45).
There are five games remaining in this COVID-19 spring season. The last round will be on July 9. The top team in the league will automatically move into the top league of the country next season. The second- and third-place teams will have to play against the respective bottom teams of the top league to earn a promotion.
Zbrojovka travels to FK Varnsdorf today (Wednesday) for a 5 p.m. kick off. Then they host FK Viktoria Žižkov, the third-place team in the standings, on Sunday at 5 p.m.
The remaining three games are against teams that are in the bottom half of the standings: at FC Slavoj Vyšehrad; at 1.SK Prostějov; and at home against FC Sellier & Bellot Vlašim.
SK Líšeň (7-10-8, 31), which is in ninth place, has seven points from the eight games since the pause. The league newcomer has a knack for playing top teams well, getting ties against FC Vysočina Jihlava and, last week, FK Pardubice and FK Ústí nad Labem.
Líšeň is 14 points above the relegation zone and looks good to stay in the Fortuna:Národní Liga for a second season, which was the main focus for this season.
BASEBALL
Baseball Derby Tonight in Jundrov
Cardion Hroši Brno will host Draci Brno tonight (Wednesday) in a cross-town rivalry game. First pitch is at 5 p.m. More games are scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The Draci (6-3) have inched up the standings into fourth place, behind Kotlářka Praha (7-1), Eagles Praha (6-2) and defending-champion Arrows Ostrava (5-2) after a tough weekend that had six of 10 games rained out.
Technika Brno (5-4) is fifth in the standings and Cardion Hroši Brno (5-5) is a half-game back.
The top six teams in the standings will play for postseason seeding when this 18-game first phase of the season concludes in the middle of next month. Tempo Praha (4-5) beat Hroši Brno twice last Sunday to get to just a half-game out of the top group, putting pressure on the Brno teams.
The teams that finish in seventh to 10th places will drop to play the top teams from the lower league in order to maintain their place in the extraliga.

The Brno Sports Report is published every Wednesday. All dates and times are subject to change. Most of the stories are about the traditional “English-speaking” team sports — football, hockey, baseball, basketball, American football, cricket, rugby, etc. — but it is also about the interesting local spectator and participation sports — tennis, badminton, running, horse racing, swimming, rock climbing, biking, etc. If you have any suggestions for what should be included, please comment below or send an email to bruno@brnodaily.cz.
