Žabiny Brno Wins an Exciting Czech Cup, Face KP Brno in League Play on Saturday

Žabiny Brno survived double overtime to win the Czech Cup last Sunday, beating Hradec Kralove 93-90.

“I think it was a huge mental win,” said Viktor Pruša, the head coach of BK Žabiny Brno. “We wanted it a little bit more.”

It was the 17th Czech Cup victory for the Žabiny.

At the end of regulation, Petra Záplatová, who finished with 26 points, had a chance to win the game, but her 15-foot jump shot was blocked. In the first overtime, Záplatová hit a jumper to move the game into a second overtime.

Finally in the second overtime, with 15.6 seconds left, Záplatová scored to establish a three-point lead. Hradec Kralove had an open shot with a couple of seconds left. It missed.

Kateřina Zohnová had 19 for Brno.

“I think we played very cleverly and effectively,” Pruša said. “I have no words, I’m so proud.”

Žabiny Brno earned their way into the Czech Cup title game by beating KP Brno, 71-82, in the semifinals.

The third-place game, which KP Brno won 107-50, was one for the books. Slavia Prague had so many players foul out or get injured that they were unable to put a full team on the court. With six minutes left, Slavia was cut down to four players. At 4:42 they were cut down to three. The final 1:30 was five on two.

“I’ve never experienced something like this and I hope to never experience it again,” KP Brno head coach Dušan Medvecký said after the game.

The game will be in Kralovo Pole at 3:30 p.m. KP Brno (12-2) won in overtime in Zabovrsky in the previous regular-season meeting. Last Saturday, Žabiny Brno (8-6) got the win in the semifinals of the Czech Cup Final Four in Kutná Hora.
