The reconstruction of Brno’s busy main bus station was expected to start during the summer. After some delays, the investor, ČSAD Brno-město Holdings, completed the tender and chose a contractor for the construction. It is now preparing to conclude the contract this week, said Antonín Grund, Chairman of the Board of ČSAD Brno-město Holdings, speaking to the Czech Press Agency. Brno, Nov 1 (BD) – The first phase of the reconstruction includes new lighting and revitalization of the suspended ceiling, with a parking area for buses on the upper section. The second phase will probably begin at the beginning of next year after another tender. “If everything goes well, we should close the tender by the end of November,” said Grund. The work will significantly change the appearance of the entire station, including facilities.
Next year’s work is due to include repairs to roads and platforms, the installation of a guidance light system, and the construction of a new station building on Opuštěná, where there are currently kiosks. Administrative premises for the owners of the stalls and facilities for drivers will be built in the existing station building along Plotní. We wrote about it in our previous article “Brno’s Central Bus Station Zvonařka to Undergo Renovation“.
The reconstruction project was developed by Brno architects Michal Krištof and Ondřej Chybík, who said that the station is an example of a brutalist building that needs to be cleaned and better illuminated.
The total cost of the project is CZK 100 million. Three quarters of the costs will be reimbursed from a European Union subsidy, but everything must be completed by the end of next year.
Zvonařka is an important transport hub, with about 1,000 regional, domestic and international arrivals every day. About 25,000 to 30,000 passengers per day travel through the station. Next year, after more than 40 years, it will be accessible by tram, as the line will be rerouted from Dornych to Plotní.
