Brno, Mar 28 (BD) – On Saturday, March 30, between 20:30 and 21:30, those passing by Brno’s most famous landmarks, including Spilberk Castle, the New Town Hall in Dominikanské nam., and the obelisk in Denis Gardens, will see the lights turned off for an hour, as Brno joins the international “Earth Hour” observance, which will see thousands of cities do the same thing to raise awareness of efforts to protect the global environment.

The first Earth Hour took place in Sydney, Australia, in 2007, as the lights of the famous Sydney Opera House were turned off, with over 2 million people taking part in the observance. Since then, the event has taken place on the last Saturday of March each year, and has spread around the world, reaching the Czech Republic for the first time in 2010. Last year, 113 Czech municipalities, including 16 cities, participated in Earth Hour. In total, 18,000 landmarks saw their lights turned off around the world.

Commenting on the event, Petr Hladík (KDU-CSL), First Deputy Mayor for the Environment, said: “Turning off the lights is just a symbol of the fact that the Earth’s climate is changing and we are the ones who can influence these changes. In addition, individuals can register at www.hodinazeme.cz and publicly pledge their commitment to the climate.”
