This morning in Brno, representatives of KDU-ČSL with STAN, ODS with TOP 09, the Greens, the Pirates and the Za Lužánky movement signed a coalition agreement to form the next city council. The new administration will be composed of four men (including mayor Jakub Hruška), and seven women, the largest number ever. Four of the female councillors will come from the victorious KDU-ČSL and STAN list.
The combined list of KDU-ČSL and STAN won the elections ahead of ODS/TOP 09 in 2nd and ANO in 3rd. KDU-ČSL then assembled a broad coalition, controlling 44 of the 55 seats, with only ANO remaining in opposition.
In addition to Hruška, the council will include Irena Matonohová (STAN), Marie Jílková (KDU-ČSL), Kateřina Basel (KDU-ČSL), Tereza Karafiátová (STAN), Kamila Zlatušková (for ODS), Tomáš Aberl (TOP 09), Matyáš Svoboda (ODS), Natálie Vencovská (SZ), Adam Zemek (Pirates) and Jana Janulíková (For Lužánky).
The deputy mayors will be Zlatušková, Matonohová, Jílková and Vencovská. Hruška will be responsible for security and finance, Matonohová will remain in charge of education and will now also oversee the participatory budget. Jílková will be in charge of social affairs and healthcare, Kateřina Basel will be in charge of the zoning plan and energy, and Karafiátová will oversee investments.
Zlatušková will be responsible for sports and foreign affairs, Aberl for IT, and Svoboda for property and housing. Vencovská will be the councillor for the environment, Zemek will get transport, and Janulíková will take care of culture and tourism and preparations for the stadium project.
Hruška highlighted three key areas he wants to change. “It’s definitely communication. First and foremost, people will know where to turn and that we are ready to come to their aid. We definitely want to make fundamental changes in transportation and, undoubtedly, in housing, which is a problem for the people of Brno.”
In particular, he said, “we want to solve the syndrome of unrepaired apartments that could serve people. Public transport also does not have as much priority as it could have. And we will definitely address the area in front of the station.”
The previous council was led by a coalition of ODS with TOP 09, KDU-ČSL with STAN, and independent politicians, some of them previously expelled by ANO, and some former members of SOCDEM. Markéta Vaňková (ODS) had served as mayor for eight years.
