The Úvoz Winter Stadium (Zimní stadion) has undergone extensive reconstruction works to modernize its technological and operational facilities. The stadium, which dates back to the mid-1970s, is unique due to its location, located less than 50 metres from an elementary school, which creates ideal conditions for combining sports and education.
The facility is administered and operated by the Brno-střed municipal district, through its contributory organization, the Kraví hora Sports and Recreational Complex. Much of the technological equipment at the facility was already at the end of its service life, so the municipal district proceeded with a significant reconstruction.
“Visitors will not notice much of the completed work, as it mainly concerned the technological infrastructure,” said Roman Kotěra (ODS), 3rd Deputy Mayor of the Brno-Střed district. “However, from an operational point of view, this is a significant investment, which will significantly improve operating conditions, reduce the energy consumption of the sports venue, and improve the quality of the ice. For example, the workers carried out new concreting of the ice surface, and replaced the cooling system and pipes.”
The reconstruction, which cost almost CZK 10 million, began in early April. Most of the work was completed by mid-summer, followed by load tests to ensure that the hall could serve the public and the HCM Warriors hockey club, which has its home there, as soon as possible.
“We are investing in the long-term improvement of sports infrastructure in Brno,” said Brno Mayor Markéta Vaňková (ODS). “The Úvoz Ice Arena is one of four indoor ice rinks in the city and its modernization was necessary. Thanks to a subsidy from the city of Brno, the city district was able to cover all the costs of the reconstruction.”
The stadium, where current San Jose Sharks defender Libor Hájek and former elite extra league forward Jiří Polanský played as juniors, has undergone other changes in recent years. The changing rooms and lighting have recently been replaced, and insulation of the stadium’s outer shell is also planned in the coming years.
