FOOTBALL

Zbrojovka, Lokomotiva Both Notch Important 5-0 Games

FC Zbrojovka, the top men’s football team in Brno, and FC Lokomotiva-Horni Herspice, the top women’s football team in the city, both won important (possibly season-saving) games within hours of each other last Saturday. Both teams scored five goals and shut out their opposition.

Zbrojovka and its 5-0 win over visiting Třinec guaranteed that they would finish in third place in the Fortuna:Narodni Liga and earn a chance to play for the right to return to the country’s top league next season.

Lukas Magera opened the scored in the 31st minute. It was his 12th goal of the season. Ondrej Pachlopník added another just before halftime.

Šimon Šumbera scored back to back in the 74th and 81st minutes. Šumbera now has five goals and four assists, including three goals in the last two games after being carried off the field on May 7 with what appeared to be a terrible injury. Damián Bariš closed off the offensive day in the 85th minute.

Jiří Floder, 22, had his fourth shutout in five games. He has allowed just two goals — both at FC Vítkovice — in 450 minutes.

Zbrojovka (16-6-7, 54 points) has one more regular season game this Saturday at second-place Jihlava. Then, they know that they will play a home-and-away series against the to-be-determined 14th-place team in the Fortuna:Liga. The series will start in Brno next Wednesday at 6 p.m. and conclude away on Sunday, June 2 at 6:30 p.m.

The most likely opponent is 1.FK Příbram. Bohemians Praha 1905 is also a possibility, should they lose and Příbram win during the final round of the Playout Bracket of the Fortuna:Liga this Saturday.

Zbrojovaka has 57 goals this season, equal to SK Dynamo Č. Budějovice.

Lokomotiva beat FK Dukla Praha, 5-0, to guarantee that they will not be relegated from the country’s top women’s league. Lokomotiva now has a seven-point advantage over last-place FC Hradec Králové, the team that will visit South Brno on June 1 for an 11 a.m. game.

Only the last-place team will be relegated to the lower league at the end of the season.

Nikol Mazúchová opened the scored against Dukla in the 14th minute and, three minutes later, Šárka Krištofová added another. Before halftime, Mazúchová had another (26th minute) and Laura Žemberyová (37th minute) put the home team up 4-0. Tessa Andujar had the final goal in the final minute of the game.

On June 9, Lokomotiva will finish play in the Playout Bracket when they travel to FC Viktoria Plzeň.

BASEBALL

Draci Finish 27 Rounds in Second

The first part of the Czech extraliga baseball season will close this weekend with every team having played each other three times. Defending champion Ostrava Arrows will finish atop the standings with a record of 24-3. The Brno Draci are two games back with a 22-5 record.

Cardion Hroši Brno (10-14) are right on the cusp of either playing with the top six teams of the league or playing in the lower group when the teams realign. They have a three-game series with Skokani Olomouc (4-20): a doubleheader in Olomouc on Saturday and a 3 p.m. home game on Sunday.

The Hroši need the Třebíč Nuclears (10-14) to struggle in three games against Tempo Praha (13-11).

Technika Brno (2-22) is last in the standings. They play three games against Kotlářka Praha (13-11), including a Saturday doubleheader.

The Arrows and Draci have already played each team in the league three times, including each other. Nevertheless, they will play each other three times this weekend. Friday night and Saturday afternoon games will be in Ostrava. The series moves to South Brno on Sunday for a 2 p.m. start.

AMERICAN FOOTBALL

Sígrs Win by Shutout

The field at Brno Bytrc saw two lopsided American Football games last weekend. Unfortunately, the home team was happy after only one of them.

The Brno Sígrs shut out the Ústí nad Labem Blades, 41-0, on Saturday. Then, on Sunday, the Brno Alligators were shut out by the Aquaponik Ostrava Steelers, 0-49.

The Sígrs (3-3), who had also been shutout at Ostrava (3-2) the week before, are in third place in the Eastern Division of the Paddock League. The Alligators (0-6) are in fourth place.

Tyrone Clark led the Sígrs with scores on first-half touchdown runs of 5 and 22 yards. In the fourth quarter, he caught a 19-yard pass from Wesley Geisler. Geisler also hit Igor Mašlanka for a 28-yard score in the second quarter.

The standings may shake out a little bit more this Sunday, as the Alligators travel to Ústí nad Labem Blades (1-5), the last-place team in the Western Division, for a 3 p.m. game and the Sígrs go to Eastern Division leaders Vysočina Gladiators (4-1) for a 4 p.m. game.

There are four games remaining in the regular season. The Sígrs have a decent chance to advance into their second postseason in their second season in the top league of the country. After travelling to Vysočina this Sunday, they go to Pilsen Patriots (2-4) on June 8, host Ostrava (3-2) on June 15 and host the Alligators on June 22 on the final weekend of the regular season.

The Brno Sports Report is published every Wednesday. All dates and times are subject to change. Most of the stories are about the traditional “English-speaking” team sports — football, hockey, baseball, basketball, American football, cricket, rugby, etc. — but it is also about the interesting local spectator and participation sports — tennis, badminton, running, horse racing, swimming, rock climbing, biking, etc. If you have any suggestions for what should be included, please comment below or send an email to brnosports@gmail.com.
