For the second time, September is the month of local products in Brno and its surrounding areas, marked by a series of thematic events and lectures, as well as many farmers’ markets taking place in various parts of the city and across South Moravia.
The goal of the initiative is to strengthen cooperation in the Brno Metropolitan Area, i.e. between the City of Brno and the municipalities in its hinterland. The municipalities have been systematically addressing the topic of food cooperation since mid-2024, through the development of a map application, Farmáři z regionu, the hosting of a special market in the courtyard of the Old Town Hall, the Good Practice Guide for educational institutes, and the coordination of policies and stakeholders through working groups.
The metropolitan project also pays special attention to supporting local production in public catering, cooperating with school canteen managers to collect data on the use of local products. This year, based on this feedback, the initiative created a cookbook of recipes from local ingredients for school canteens, to make it easier for school caterers to use the best locally-sourced foods that the region has to offer. In September, there will be a third demonstration for school canteen managers of cooking from local ingredients.
So where can you find farmers’ markets to pick up the quality products from around the region? Below you will find a calendar of events for Brno and the surrounding municipalities this September.

As is traditional, farmers’ markets are also held every day at Zelný trh and on Husitská in Brno-Královo Pole. The range of products and vendors is usually the widest on Saturdays. Don’t forget that producers are colour-coded. Green-marked vendors – farmers, growers or gardeners – sell produce and products exclusively from their own production.
Furthermore, the map application Farmáři z regionu has been operating for over a year, connecting Brno customers who love local products with the farms that produce them. During that time, more than 20,000 users have used the app to locate 104 farms in Brno and its surroundings.

OTHER EVENTS
On this year’s Science Night (25 September), the initiative has prepared an activity in co-operation with Mendel University: “Discover the story of food around us“, taking place in the Q building of the MENDELU campus. The event will include fun, interactive tasks including an online quiz, and the opportunity to learn more about where our food comes from and what role it plays in our environment.
The entire Month of Local Production will end on 6 October with a public discussion: “Where the concrete ends and the field begins: What urban agriculture looks like in the age of climate change”. Experts in climatology, urban agriculture and strategic planning will take part, as well as representatives of the local agricultural community. The panel will discuss how climate change is affecting the landscape of South Moravia and what it means for the food that ends up on our plates, as well as how the city can support agricultural land, a healthy environment, and local producers.
