Second Car Crash In Two Days In The Area of Husovice Tunnel

Over the last two days, there have been two car accidents in and around the Husovice tunnel. This morning, a truck crashed into a passenger car, just a few metres from the tunnel where a drunk driver lost control of his car on the bend in the tunnel yesterday morning. Photo credit: Policie Brno.

Brno, Jun 16 (BD) – Shortly before noon today, a truck collided with a passenger car after leaving the Husovice tunnel, according to police spokesman Petr Vala. It is the second road accident in the area in two days; on Monday morning a 30-year-old drunk driver crashed on the bend of the tunnel after losing control of his car at high speed. No other cars were involved in yesterday’s accident thanks to low traffic in the tunnel at the time.

After this morning’s collision, the passenger car crashed into the concrete barriers at the side of the road, and rolled over several times. All three passengers were injured in the accident, and two had to be taken to the hospital, both older men. Although the exact cause of the crash is still under investigation, police suspect that it may have been due a lack of attention by the truck driver. Neither driver was under the influence of alcohol.

The drunk driver that crashed on Monday had an alcohol reading of 2.3 alcohol per mille, more than double the 1 per mille limit to be charged with dangerous driving under the influence of a mind-altering substance. This was also not an isolated incident of drunk driving in the tunnel; during an alcohol check on Saturday morning, police caught five drivers under influence in just two hours. In most cases, the drivers were caught with around 0.5 per mille of alcohol, with even the highest still under 1. The next morning, another five drivers were caught driving under the influence, with one testing positive for marijuana rather than alcohol.
