Jakub Hruška Sworn In As New Mayor of Brno, Along With New City Council

Last updated:

The newly elected Brno city councillors took their seats for the first time yesterday at the New Town Hall. At the inaugural meeting, they elected a new city leadership – Jakub Hruška (KDU-CSL) became the mayor, alongside four deputy mayors and six councillors in the governing cabinet.

As the newly elected mayor, Hruška will be in charge of the city’s budget and financing, cybersecurity, and strategic projects.

The Deputy Mayors will be:

  • Kamila Zlatušková (ODS), responsible for sports and foreign relations
  • Natálie Vencovská (Greens), responsible for sustainable development and the environment
  • Irena Matonohová (STAN), responsible for education, youth and public participation
  • Marie Jílková (KDU-CSL), responsible for healthcare, social care, and rent of city apartments

The remaining members of the council are:

  • Matyáš Svoboda (ODS), responsible for city property, property management and housing
  • Kateřina Basel (KDU-CSL), responsible for planning and development, public space and urban energy
  • Tereza Karafiátová (STAN), responsible for investments and European funds
  • Tomáš Aberl (TOP 09), responsible for IT, strategic development and innovation
  • Adam Zemek (Pirates), responsible for transport and mobility
  • Jana Janulíková (Za Lužánky), responsible for culture, heritage preservation, marketing and tourism

Yesterday’s council meeting also discussed other matters, including a resolution of support for the regional studios of Czech Television and Czech Radio in Brno. The representatives noted and confirmed their June declaration, and will now ask the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate to ensure that the current functions of regional studios are preserved during the government’s proposed changes to the broadcasters, including their programming role, the minimum scope of regional broadcasting, and the legal share of television studios in nationwide broadcasting.

At the same time, the council demands that any new legislation should guarantee adequate, long-term, and politically independent funding of public service media, and not lead to a weakening of the production capacities of regional studios, limits on original audiovisual and radio production, or the transfer of financial resources and creative capacity from the regions to Prague.
