Explore the Nanoworld During the Days of Electron Microscopy

From March 11th-15th, the Days of Electron Microscopy (DEM) will return to Brno, offering a unique opportunity to visit normally inaccessible laboratories, attend interesting lectures, and try out an electron microscope. Admission to the event is free. Photo: Light Bulb by DEM.

Brno, Mar 9 (BD) – Brno is considered the capital of electron microscopy, producing 30% of the world’s electron microscopes. In part to honor this, the Days of Electron Microscopy festival is taking place for the fourth time this year, giving visitors the opportunity to explore the mysteries of the world up to a million times larger. The opening of the festival will take place on Wednesday, March 11th from 4pm to 9pm in the Zelny trh market, and the event will last until Sunday 15th.

“I am delighted that, in a playful and unusual way, we have managed to promote a field that has been closely connected with the city for more than half a century. Brno has been actively supporting educational events and the popularization of science in the long term with the aim of stimulating young people’s interest in the study of technical and natural sciences. I consider it very important in developing the technological potential of our region,” said Deputy Mayor Tomas Kolacny (Pirati).

The state-of-the-art laboratories of microscope manufacturers and scientific institutes will open their doors to the public as part of the event, accompanied by entertainment for families and children, and interesting lectures by experts. Over the five days, there are more than 30 activities to choose from.

On the opening day, visitors can play games, carry out experiments, and get the taste of a molecular menu in the Zelny trh market. Additionally, there is a new audiovisual installation of an “electron tunnel” to explore, which allows visitors to look into the microworld, see images from electron microscopes and learn about the operation of these devices and their practical uses.

In addition to the regular program, there will be a tour in English of the Central Laboratory of Cryo-electron microscopy and tomography, with one of the largest electron microscopes in Europe, on Saturday March 14th at 5pm. It will be accompanied with an entertaining program including a quiz and a hologram projection. In order to join the tour, it’s necessary to register in advance here.

The entire program is free of charge. You can find the whole program and book individual excursions and lectures here.
