VOLLEYBALL

Another Brno Derby on Tap for Saturday

VK Královo Pole will host crosstown rival and league-leading VK Brno on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

Šelmy Brno have 64 points and a five-point lead in the standings over Olomouc (59 points). Prostějov is third with 44 points.

After the Brno derby, both Brno teams will have three matches left in the regular season.

Brno Men To Be Showcased on CT Sport Monday

ČEZ Karlovarsko is atop the men’s standings with 50 points and České Budějovice is second with 42. Volejbal Brno is in third with 37 points.

ICE HOCKEY

Kometa Maintains Sixth Place with Postseason Coming

HC Kometa hit such a low point last week that Libor Zábranský, the owner and head coach, took the extraordinary step of publicly apologizing for the state of the team. It worked, kind of.

The team subsequently won two games, beating Mountfield HK, 2-1, at home on Feb. 18 and PSG Berani Zlín, 3-5, on the road last Saturday. Then they hit another bump when, back on home ice, they lost to HC Olomouc, 3-5, on Sunday.

There are four games left in the Tipsport extraliga regular season. Three of them are at home against the league-leading Bílí Tygři Liberec on Friday at 6 p.m.; last-place Rytíři Kladno on Sunday at 3 p.m.; and second-to-last HC Dynamo Pardubice on March 6 at 6 p.m. The one road game is at second-place HC Škoda Plzeň on March 3 at 5:30 p.m.

WOMEN’S FOOTBALL

Lokomotiva Earns Respect at Sparta, Play Slavia Next

The top women’s football league of the country resumed last weekend with Lokomotiva Brno-Horni Herspice putting together a respectable result, losing 3-1 at AC Sparta Praha on Sunday.

Sparta (10-0-2), the No. 2 team in the league, scored two first-half goals within five minutes of each other. Then Šárka Krištofová scored for Brno three minutes into the second half to cut the lead to one goal.

The Brno offense could thereafter not produce any more tallies. Sparta added the final goal two minutes into extra time.

Lokomotiva Brno (3-2-7) is in fifth place with 11 points. They host undefeated league-leader SK Slavia Praha (12-0-0) on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Lokomotiva is trailing FC Viktoria Plzeň (7-0-5, 21 points) and 1. FC Slovácko (4-3-5, 15). FK Dukla Praha (3-2-7, 11), FK Pardubice (3-0-9, 9) and FC Slovan Liberec (1-3-8, 6) are lower in the standings.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

mmcité1 Resumes Group A2 Play Saturday

mmcité1 Basket Brno has won the first two games of Group A2 of the Kooperativa NBL. They resume play at GEOSAN Kolín on Leap Day Saturday.

The next home game is against Kingspan Královští sokoli on March 4. Then there are two games a week through March and until the end of the Group A2 phase of the season.

Group A2 has four teams — Kingspan Královští sokoli (7-17), NH Ostrava (6-18), Brno (5-19) and GEOSAN Kolín (5-19) — who will build upon their records from the first 22 games of the regular season, when each team played home and away games within the entire 12-team league. The top teams are in Group A1.

Group A2 teams will play two home and two away games against each other. After 12 rounds, the bottom team will play the top two teams from the lower league for the right to stay among the elite clubs. The top three teams from Group A2 will play for the chance to enter the playoffs with pig-tail series from April 10 to 14. The main playoff bracket is from April 17 to May 30.

The Brno Sports Report is published every Wednesday. All dates and times are subject to change. Most of the stories are about the traditional “English-speaking” team sports — football, hockey, baseball, basketball, American football, cricket, rugby, etc. — but it is also about the interesting local spectator and participation sports — tennis, badminton, running, horse racing, swimming, rock climbing, biking, etc. If you have any suggestions for what should be included, please comment below or send an email to bruno@brnodaily.cz
