What’s Up Brno? – Events in Brno, Week n°46

Brno, Nov 10 (BD) – Next week will see lots of festivals and academic conferences. Catch a St. Martin’s wine-tasting festival or an English stand-up comedy event. Take a one-day trip to an auto-moto exchange flea market to find new antique decorations for your home. We’ve got you covered, as always, for all the fun things happening in Brno this week.

On Monday, a big Traditional St. Martin’s Wine Tasting festival in Brno (Svatomartinský Košt 2019) will bring namesti Svobody to life with lots of interesting sights. You will see St. Martin (played by Martin Havelka from the Brno City Theater) followed by a large parade heading to the city center to present the first wine of the year. At the festival, 100 winemakers from Moravia and Bohemia will showcase and sell their new wines. The festival will run from 11am to 5pm on Monday November 11th, with CZK 60 for admission. From November 12th -13th, Sono Centrum will host the Evolve! Summit 2019, a unique conference designed for HR professionals and recruiters, or anyone else interested in entering the field. The conference will take place in English, Czech and Slovak. At the summit you will get inspired by all the most up-to-date news about human resources, and find 40 speakers from across the CEE region, informative lectures, workshops, and networking zones, plus an after party! Ever wondered how your job might transform in the next couple of years? An open session entitled: The Future of Work: Radical Changes in Jobs and Careers, should give you some key insights about future career trends, as disruptive innovation and tech-driven change quickly penetrates every field. This is a great opportunity to meet experts from Deloitte, Deutsche Telekom Services Europe Czech Republic CZ, Jobs2030, and Zebra Technologies, who will present their own knowledge and expertise about the jobs of the future. The conference will be held in the Courtyard by Marriott Brno on November 13th, and is in English and free to attend. Looking for an event that combines art, shopping, and concerts this weekend? Visit the exhibition by Valencik Art Society, and you will find exclusive modern artwork, clothes and other handmade everyday products on the theme of “freedom”. If you find yourself a pair of comfy gloves for this winter, you can pay a little money for it. Alongside the exhibition, there will be two concerts to entertain you during your visit. Next up, it’s time for “cute and dark” comedy, are you ready? After a successful show in September, English Stand-up – Dragos – “Hungry Hungry Dragon” will return to Brno on November 14th. “Hungry Hungry Dragon” tells the story of Dragos – a Romanian stand-up comedian, and his journey from Romania to UK, Japan, Singapore, Estonia and Germany, to present the unique cultural experiences, mainly about language barriers and cultural identity, that he has been through on the way. Practising English, making friends, drinking beer: these are those sociable activities you could expect at the November MeetUp by Foreigners Brno on November 14th. Whether you are new in town or have been living in Brno for a while, all are invited to this monthly meeting to meet, learn and exchange ideas with new friends and people from different backgrounds at Yume Anime Bar. Fish and chips OR vegan seafood, which do you prefer? At least for one day, we suggest that vegan seafood would be the better choice, as the Vegan Seafood Day comes to Vegalité on November 14th from 14h to 22h, a treat for those who love having vegan alternatives to fish and seafood. It seems that Brno has had a never-ending supply of film festivals this year, hosting loads of successful film festivals such as Brno16, Ekofilm, Serial Killer and many others. Next up, from the evening on Friday November 15th to November 22nd, comes a special film festival about love, passion and creativity in the LGBTQ+ community, that comes every year to Brno. The 20th annual Mezipatra Queer Film Festival will screen 100 Czech and international films focusing on current LGBTQ+ issues. There is an engaging accompanying programme including workshops, lectures, discussions and parties under the theme of “Winds of change”. Rock and roll under the Iron Curtain? Could they be connected? Find out by coming to see the documentary “Free to Rock”: you will be surprised how much of a contributing factor rock and roll was in the call for freedom throughout Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union, from the end of World War II until the end of the Cold War. The film was directed by the four-time Emmy-award winning filmmaker Jim Brown, and will be screened at Kino Scala in English for free at 21h on November 16th, as part of the 30 Years of Freedom festival. Put on warm clothes, grab an umbrella and stop by the outdoor Auto-moto Exchange and Flea Market to hunt for cheap paintings, books, toys, cameras and loads of other interesting stuff, all sold from cars and motorcycles. The market will be at Stadion Za Lužánkami on November 16th from 6am to 12pm. Entry will cost you CZK 30/buyer and CZK 150/seller.
