Brno, May 28 (BD) – Numbeo claims to analyse data from 8,316 cities entered by 347,427 contributors and uses the following criteria to evaluate cities’ quality of life:
· “Cost of living and purchasing power
· Affordability of housing
· Pollution including air, water, etc.
· Crime rates
· Health system quality
· Traffic (commute times)”
In 2018, Brno ranked seventieth in the world in terms of quality of life, ahead of all other Czech cities analysed by Numbeo, including Prague (72), and ahead of all other Eastern European cities (defined as cities in Russia, Poland, Slovakia, Romania, Belarus, Hungary, Ukraine and Bulgaria).
Brno even placed higher than some perennial favourites: Honolulu in Hawaii (71), Oslo (73), San Francisco (81), Brussels (91), Dublin (96) and Barcelona (113), to name a few.
Brno ranks highly across the board, particularly in commute times, crime rates and health system quality.
The website brnoregion.com, a part of the International Knowledge Region Marketing project, is also singing Brno’ praises, noting in an article titled “From A to B” published May 1, 2018, that while there are obviously some issues with traffic in the city, public transport is a definite plus.
The article also noted that Brno’s central location in Europe contributes to its desirability, as it “has since Roman times when it was a trade centre on the Amber Road which connected the coasts of Northern Europe to the Mediterranean”.
Rising housing prices, on the other hand, may be a cause for concern, as discussed in a recent Brno Daily article. Although Numbeo data still indicate that housing prices in Brno are reasonable relative to average wages, prices are expected to continue to rise in 2018.
