Prague, Jan 22 (CTK) – Forty-seven percent of voters have decided to vote for former Science Academy head Jiri Drahos and 43 percent for President Milos Zeman in the Czech presidential election runoff next weekend, according to the STEM/MARK poll whose results daily Mlada fronta Dnes (MfD) published today.
The remaining 10 percent of those who plan to take part in the election are still undecided, the poll showed.
“Jiri Drahos still holds higher trumps. However, the result will be very narrow,” Pavel Simonik, from STEM/MARK, told the paper.
Out of the poll’s 1,078 respondents, 52 percent definitely want to cast their votes and another 15 percent will probably do so.
Drahos is more often supported by young people under 45 and those with higher education.
Zeman is supported by older people and those with lower education. Such people also prevail among the ten percent of the undecided voters, the poll showed.
Ninety-two percent of those who supported Zeman in the first round of the direct election on January 12-13 want to support him in the upcoming runoff as well.
Out of the voters who supported any of the seven candidates who were ousted in the first round, 72 percent prefer Drahos, 15 percent prefer Zeman, and the remaining 13 percent hesitate.
Out of political parties’ fans, Zeman enjoys a majority support of the voters of the Communists (KSCM), Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD), ANO and the Social Democrats (CSSD), while Drahos is supported by a large majority of the voters of TOP 09, the Civic Democrats (ODS), the Christian Democrats (KDU-CSL) and the Pirates.
Out of the voters who have decided to vote for Drahos, 42 percent do so in order to prevent the re-election of Zeman.
Vice versa, only 17 percent of pro-Zeman voters support him in order to oust Drahos.
According to the poll, Drahos is expected to win the strongest support, about two thirds of the vote, in Prague.
Zeman’s strongest gain, 63 percent, is expected in the Moravia-Silesia Region.
Zeman is more supported by people in villages and towns with a population from 20 to 99,000.
Drahos is preferred by voters in towns with a population from five to 20,000 and in cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants.
Out of the other polls released before the runoff, one showed Drahos as a favourite, while the other presented Drahos and Zeman’s chances as approximately equal.
Today is the last day for public opinion polls to be released before the pre-election moratorium.
