Did you know that 36.7 million Americans, or 15% of US adults, practice yoga in the United States? Last year’s report from The Yoga Alliance organization pointed out the growth in numbers, which almost doubled in comparison to 2012’s ‘mere’ 20.4 million Americans. This is not an isolated phenomenon – numbers are rising worldwide as more and more people are inspired to step on the mat and devote time to this well-known workout.
And how is an ancient practice actually gaining popularity in this hectic modern world? Although yoga used to be a neglected case in medical literature, scientists have been turning their attention to what happens physiologically and mentally when we practice. And the results seem to be astounding – the studies have shown not only the health benefits of yoga, but suggest it as possible treatments for depression and anxiety.
Yoga classes focus on breath, movement and body awareness, and as such can vary from gentle and soothing to strenuous exercise which combines arm balances, inversions, challenging positions and admirable flexibility. However, it’s not only about asanas – a term which refers to the physical postures. The Yoga Sutras, scripts written 2200 years ago which explain the principles and basic teachings of yoga, describe the goal of practice as “settling the mind into silence” and finding freedom.
All yoga lovers and enthusiasts who wish to get better acquainted with the vast world of this practice can enjoy the 4th Live Yoga Love Brno Festival, which starts on Friday, November 10, and lasts until Sunday. Upcoming three days of this festival will be abundant with lectures and workshops, and hosted in three halls of leisure center SVČ Lužánky.
You will not only be able to practice, but enjoy tea, coffee and other refreshments. Festival food will be provided by the MyKitchen buffet restaurant. This year’s festival is organized by a team of Yoga Lokah yoga students from Brno, whose lectures you can also attend or otherwise meet them at the festival in a high-spirited atmosphere.
Apart from the Czech-speaking workshops, English-speaking visitors have plenty of opportunities to enjoy during the festival. International lecturers such as Alyona Tychonova from Moscow, Granville Cousin from Manchester and Patrick Hoenner from Strasbourg will have their classes in English. So grab your mats and enjoy a weekend of healthy exercise!
