Brno, Sep 27 (BD) – In 40 years of the competition, Brno is the first Czech city joining the list of European cities with the highest quality greenery, such as Edinburgh, Dresden or Birmingham.
Otevřená záhrada (Open Garden) got extra plus points
The jury loved Otevřená záhrada (Open Garden) where Brno citizens cultivate flower beds and vineyards on the southern Špilberk slopes.
The jury also appreciated that parks are enjoyed by all generations and preferences in urban planning. Brno prefers greenery than a block of flats as proved by the placement of the park Pod Plachtami.
How did the jury from AEFP decide? All jury members took a 7 hour-long city tour while assessing 12 different areas of the city life. They passed through parks, gardens and didn’t single out factors such as waste management, convenience for tourists, or ecology awareness.
New plans will embellish city even more
Deputy Mayor for the Environment Martin Ander told more about city green plans to the Czech on-line daily iDnes.cz: “Recently, we have reconstructed Špilberk park and we want to modify the northern slope above Otevřená záhrada. In the future, there will be footpaths, educational trails, and even the path in the crowns of the trees.
He added that “The reconstruction of another part of the Kapucínské terasy under Petrov is negotiated for about 20 million CZK as well. It should be finished at the turn of 2018 and 2019. That means, there will be more rest zones in the city center.”
On the occasion of the competition, Brno Municipality asked the citizens to take the best photos of blossoming nature in the city last spring. You can view the best shots in the public gallery: here.
Planting flowers, beautifying the city, fostering ecologically and environmentally sensitive development – those are the goals of The European Association for Flowers and Landscape (AEFP), the competition main organizer. AEFP “desires to promote more interconnected network among people from towns and villages with a deep feeling for greener and pleasant environment.”
Deputy Mayor for the Environment Ander shared the same idea in iDnes.cz. He believes that such a success will be attractive for tourists and will add up to the prestige of the city as well.
