Brno, August 30 (BD) – Hungarian low-cost airline WizzAir withholds their cooperation with Brno airport. Governor of the South Moravian Region is enraged by WizzAir’s allegedly unfair approach. The region plans to find another airline operator providing a regular fare from Brno to Eindhoven connecting the city with entire Europe.
After 6 years of service, WizzAir cancelled one of the popular flights from Brno to Eindhoven (Netherlands). The cancellation was accompanied by harsh criticism by Bohumil Šimek, Governor of the South Moravian Region. Now, a new airline is wanted and needed!
Mismatch between WizzAir and South Moravia
WizzAir and Šimek do not get along well.
Governor Šimek criticizes WizzAir for their reason to withhold the Eindhoven flight which was low demand.
For Zdopravy.cz (Czech Transport Magazine) Šimek stated: “The company asked for more financial assistance from the region and from the City in order to sustain the flight connection. We had repeatedly required some economic justification and actual calculation, but our demand was not met.” Šimek believes that the connection was usually utilized up to 80% and it is still profitable if it reaches 60% of utilization.
WizzAir spokesperson Sorina Ratz for Czech Television (Česká televize) explains the decision: “Our capacities will be redirected to higher-demanded connections such as Prague – Eilat (Israel)”.
The only financially supported flight from Brno is the one to Munich. According to Brno Airport spokesperson Kateřina Pichalová, this connection should be self-sufficient by 2018/2019, too.
WizzAir out, new airlines in
Both, South Moravian representatives and Brno airport try to re–connect Brno with Europe. Currently, they are searching for new airlines facilitating Brno – Eindhoven connection. “We, together with South Moravia representatives, are intensively negotiating with various airlines,” Pichlová told to the Czech Television (Česká televize). Šimek is interested in tight, long-term cooperation with the new airlines.
Czech Television informs that South Moravia has already commenced talks with two airlines about new regular flights and possibly in a month, new air routes for Brno would be secured.
Final destinations, new airline operators, and the existence of air connection Brno – Eindhoven are still in question.
